Musculoskeletal Pain and Preventive Review Arising from Long-distance Running

Abstract
All forms of running endeavour place stresses on the runner¡¯s musculoskeletal system. Musculoskeletal pain arising from irritation of myofascial, periarticular or articular tissues can be acute or chronic. Poor posture or repetitive movement can also cause musculoskeletal pain. Changes in posture or poor body mechanics may lead to spinal alignment problems and muscle shortening, with the result that other muscles are misused and become painful. We performed this study to determine the frequency and pattern of musculoskeletal pains incurred by Long-distance runner. If the alignment is already changed before the initial movement starts, correction in movement has to be done. Correction in optimal move-ment patterns alters the structures for increased stress (or load) and it can be assumed that there is greater possibility for microtraumas to joints and supporting structures. Movement system balance approach emphasis less on identifying the source of the symptoms instead on identifying the cause. To reduce the risk, we need intervention strategies such as preventive education, a movement system balance approach to exercise for running conditions, and improved mechanical conditions related to therapeutic patterns.
